I was trying to find a way to back-up my stuff online. I’ve heard about me.com by Apple. However, I don’t like it. ‘Coz things are not exactly what I want. Yes it syncs ur files, backs up all your application settings, etc.. But there was something missing. I was looking for something very simple. Anyway, I found Dropbox. I’ve been using it for maybe last 2-3 months. And now I’m quite happy :)
What is Dropbox
Dropbox is the easiest way to share and store your files online. There is no complicated interfaces to learn. Dropbox runs in the background on your desktop (both in Mac OSX and Windows). And it just syncs your files automatically to your computers and the web. You can sign in and access your files from any browser or mobile device. And sharing files with your friends and family is just two clicks away (I love this part). Viewing your photos in a gallery and sharing them is very easy.
It Just Works
Dropbox works just like any other folder on your computer, but with a few differences.
Here’s how it works:
- Drag and drop to move files around, just like you normally would
- Any files or folders inside Dropbox will get synchronized to Dropbox’s servers and any other computer linked to your account.
- Green checkmarks will appear on top of your files to let you know that they’re synced and up to date.

Your files are always safe. All data is transferred over SSL and encrypted with AES-256 before storage.
Worry-free Syncing
Dropbox keeps track of every change made to any of its contents. Any changes are instantly and automatically sent to any other computer linked to your Dropbox. The Dropbox clients for Windows, Mac and Linux all play nice with one another too!

Dropbox is also smart with how it tracks changes to files. Every time you make a change, Dropbox only transfers the piece of the file that changed (also known as block-level or delta sync), making it easy to work with big files like Photoshop or Powerpoint documents.

Access From Anywhere
Not at any of your computers and want to grab one of your files? Just hop onto Dropbox’s web interface for access to your files from anywhere in the world.

The web interface is your Dropbox away from home. Download your files to computers without the Dropbox client, or upload new files to be synced to all your computers.
Dropbox’s web interface is also like a virtual time machine that remembers every change you ever make. View or restore any previous versions of a given file. You can even undelete files that you may have accidentally trashed.

Share Your Files
Dropbox’s shared folders make it easy for you to share a bunch of stuff with other people. This makes Dropbox perfect for team projects, music/video editing, and much more. Any member of a shared folder can add, edit and delete the contents within. Collaborators of your shared folder won’t have access to any of your files outside of that folder. Changes made to a shared folder are instantly sent to every member of that folder.

Need to share some files with non-Dropbox users? Just drop files into your Public folder. Any files in here will be given a link that you can send to others in emails, IMs, blogs, etc. without requiring people to sign up for Dropbox.

All of above features are just free up to 2GB. And my personal experience is, Dropbox is extremely fast when you compare to other equivalents. So, if you like above features, go try!

What do you think about Mozy, I have been pretty happy.. it is a bit slow, especially at the beginning. Cheap enough at 4.95. Did you consider, or you are happy wtih DB..?
Thx
May 6, 2009, 1:04 PM@richard, I used Mozy as well. Honestly I didn’t like it at all. I also gave them a feedback why I didn’t like it.
Dropbox is frigen fast, IDK how they implemented it, but it’s amazing. 20MB data is just going to your server in 10-20 seconds.. Just try free version. I know it’s a bit expensive, but it’s really a good service. I’m so happy so far.
May 6, 2009, 2:17 PMI see no “shared” folder. Are these the folders in my “Dropbox,” Photos, Public and etc? How do I link another computer or person to me?
